I just discovered that our camera isn't as completely dead as I had  thought... make no mistake, it's definitely mostly dead, but it has a saving grace. Apparently, it can no longer handle color in any shape or form... you get nothing but streaks of black with worbles of white and magenta. In futzing around with it however, I found out that it works like a charm if it's set to black and white or sepia. While the overall situation is a bit frustrating, it means that I'm able to make do until my Dad gets a new one (fortunately, he's actively looking for a good one, so it shouldn't be too long).

This means that I now have evidence of my Sleepy Hollow Stripey progress! Fortunately, the dress is black and white, so the no color thing doesn't matter terribly.

As you can see, I still need to trim the polonaise (and add ties to loop it up) and make the petticoat, but the bulk of it is done! I've actually been treating this whole project like a historical costume that just happens to look like Katrina van Tassel's dress, and it's been very liberating. It also makes me feel justified in my lazy dislike of sewing on fasteners, as I can continue to just pin the stomacher in place (like it is at the moment).

Oh, and I'm wearing it right now... that picture was taken about fifteen minutes ago...

Thanks! I'll probably go ahead and try dying (and using) the trim I have, but I might want to replace it with better stuff later on. I don't really have time right now to embroider it all...
Same icon... same dress(es)... some day we definately will have to get together!

Ok, more questions - what is the shape of the stomacher piece itself? And how much did you bone it? Was the Hunnisett pattern for a zone front dress or did you alter that yourself?

The shape of the stomacher is basicly the bodice front, cut straight across the bustline. I didn't bone it at all, I put a layer of buckrum between the fashion fabric and the lining. And no, the Hunnisett pattern wasn't for a zone front dress, but it was really easy to alter... I made a mock-up of the bodice as it appears in the book, and just played around with folding the front up at different angles until I thought it looked right. I used the same bodice pattern to make the stomacher, and just changed the shape and length of the front point, and cut it across at the top.

Hope that makes sense! :-)

Yes, it does, and thanks!! It looks really good, how you did it!

Where does one order buckram?

Thanks!

Er, to be quite honest, I have no idea. We carry it at work, and Field's Fabrics is a fairly small chain, so I'd imagine most fabric stores would stock it...

They have it at G street sometimes, in the section where the pattern paper rolls are.

Mmmmmmm, yes... you really should make it someday! I'm discovering that in spite of that fact that I had been planning it for about two years, I'm still really excited by this dress... it's so hard to be bored by it!

Gorgeous fit!! Though I wouldn't want to make this particular frock, I would like to make an 18th century zone front frock. Among all the other numerous frocks!

OK - back to that blue satin gown! I have till Friday night (at a push finishing early saturday morning) to get it completed!

Thanks! I used the long sleeved 18th cen pattern in Period Costumes for Stage and Screen 1500-1800 by Jean Hunnisett.

This is very beautiful, I admire your work again!
Plus, I happen to have the very same picture on my wall at home - one step on the road to becoming an accomplished costumemaker as you are one!
