I already have too many projects on my plate, and do NOT need to knit myself a Mariposa cap/hood.  It's a good thing I don't have any appropriate yarn, or I just might cave...

Someday though, some hypothetical day when I don't have any outstanding projects to be finished, I will sit down and knit and knit all for myself.

Maybe I just need more experience, or a more specific-looking illustration... the instructions sound like they're simple, but I'm having a hard time visualizing what it turns into. Maybe if I try drawing it out... okay, I think I get it, sort of.

I like the style of the instructions, though—"Knit it until it's big enough, cast off a third of the stitches on each end, do some fancy pattern here"... who needs anything exact?

It's kind of like old recipes in that way... I recently ran across one for potato cheese that said "Add a pint of milk and the requisite portion of salt" which was the first and only time it ever mentioned salt! It assumes you'll already be quite competent!

As for this pattern, I had to think long and hard before I sort of got it. It sounds like you end up with a sort of diamond or square edged with the 'lace', and one corner is folded back on top before adding the pom-poms and ties.
