I was browsing around etsy tonight when I stumbled across a seller that instantly caught my eye.

She was selling a "Custom Civil War" dress... but the image was of the picture from a Simplicity pattern.  I couple more popped up, different Simplicity patterns, all 'available in color of your choice' and claimed as custom.

This one, however, made me angry.

It's [livejournal.com profile] koshka_the_cat's 1862 mourning-for-Prince-Albert ballgown.  It's a picture of her, with her head cut off, and is labeled as "Civil War Ball Gown Satin Victorian Dress Gown Custom Made" I thought of firing off an email to the seller right away, but it's really late and I'm sure I wouldn't say the right thing.

I just thought Katherine ought to know.  There are pictures of other people's dresses too, but I unfortunately don't recognize them.

It makes me so angry when people stel things to pass off as their own.

Maybe better if K reported them to etsy with a copy of the picture with her head, than to send them an angry letter which will only result in them changing the picture to another simplicity dress?

She's using photos of extant costumes from museums. Some of the photos have a greyed out "zoom" at the bottom right hand corner.

A little word to Simplicity would get her shut down as she is illegally using their pattern images to advertise her gowns. If she is using their patterns to make the gowns to sell, she is in the wrong.

I just wonder how she can think this sort of thing is ok???

I also reported her to Esty, especially on the museum pieces.

That is appalling.

Well, HELL. I got all excited and thought I could order my very own Katherine for a second, and thought about how much fun it would be...and then realized it was all a scam, and the listing was for a dress anyway. And I was very disappointed...

LOL--And I was a bargain too!

Actually, I think that dress cost nearly that much to make. Those beads add up :)

She is using [livejournal.com profile] madamekat's Jump Dress too. That is SO unsat!

While I'm flattered she liked my dress, this is not the sort of appreciation I want!!

Success! The listing with my photo has been removed! But Katherine's dress is still there :( Hopefully it'll be removed in a few more minutes.

It's been removed. I've seen a screenshot and the google cache though...

I saw that the last week! It made me so upset. I wouldn't want someone stealing images of my reproduction clothing to list on etsy. I reported this last week to etsy, but I guess they haven't done anything about it yet. :(

Etsy is notoriously lackadaisical in its enforcement of rules - non-vintage items and non-handmade items abound.

No, that's not cool at all. :-(

People who pull this crap piss me off to no end. I just hope no one would be foolish enough to order a "custom" dress modeled by a porcelain doll - http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=39238506

This one (http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=40072279) is actually in Purdue University's collection.

I can't tell if this is an Asian sweatshop or a crafter with a case of dementia - the shop is such an odd mix of costumes and 1970s crochet items.

Also amplified bandwidth elsewhere so this seller learns that this sort of behavior is a Bad, Bad Idea.

Thank you. I was of course at work and didn't see this until after it was pulled, but I really appreciate you starting everything rolling, so to speak!
