I don't know what's happening to my costume tastes! I started out with a regency dress and grand ideas for an entire regency ensemble but in a matter of weeks dropped that and took up LotR, plotting how to make most of the costumes therein. But then I discovered the renaissance and all the wonderful garb the online goddesses have made, and all I wanted out of life was to be like them (Jen Thompson, Marie Chantal, Sarah (mode historique), etc) So I spent hours researching styles and eras I liked and basicly had my future all planned out, I'd join the SCA and have an overflowing renaissance wardrobe. *sigh* But then I had to make another regency gown for a party my friend and I put together, and the complete regency wardrobe idea came back, and then I stumbled across Padawan's Guide, and thought, 'oh, that's nice'. However, I kept going back to it again and again, even though I KNEW I would never make a Star Wars costume. I kept thinking about it, and going to all these website of SW costumers until I before I knew it I had unconciously taken it for granted I'd make some too! And now all I really dream about are movie costumes, with a occasional ren outfit for faire, but I still kinda want to join the SCA, yet I can't stick to one thing!!!
That little shpeel had no real point, but I'm not sure if I should try to find one thing I REALLY like and stick to it, or jump all over the place and flit about like a drucken moth. For instance, I also harbor grand plans for some cotehardies and pre-raphaelite inspired dresses. Is this normal for most costumers? I mean, I want to make EVERYTHING!
PS. Let's not forget I 'need' some Titanic era dresses, some bustle era, a mid 1700's dress and a civil war dress. :p

Date: 2005-03-07 04:20 pm (UTC)I do have a million costumes I want to do - and I like to have a couple projects running so I can work on one of them if another one is on hold or if I'm waiting for something. Probably the best thing to do is pick out 2 or 3 costumes you really, really want to do - and then make a list of what materials you would need for each, and how you would go about making them. I think then it'll be obvious which one of them you'll be able to attack first. Like maybe you need stays for one - or maybe you already have 75% of the supplies for, so that would be the first one up.. That's what I do anyhow. Also, it depends if there's an event. Like I put the BR on hold because with CIII coming up, I actually have a place to wear SW costumes, so I made those a priority over something I might not wear til DragonCon, if ever. :-)

Date: 2005-03-07 06:30 pm (UTC)Like right after I was in Bath (and after I got home and read 'Pride and Prejudice') I *really* wanted a regency outfit. In fact, I still have serious plans for this (well, I have the pattern for the corset, and will order the Sense and Sensibility (http://www.sensibility.com/) patterns on the 15th. But now that I have my 'Patterns of Fasion 1' book, now I really want a Georgian outfit! And of course, I always want new SCA garb.
So I'm right there with you as far as bouncing all over the place with what I want. I agree with Maggie - If you have a place where you want to wear a specific outfit, work on that next. Other than that, the skys the limit!
Do you have boxes and boxes of fabric yet? As in "oh, that piece of fabric is for this costume whenever I get around to it, and that one is for that costume if I ever want to make it, and this other piece is for another costume entirely that I wasn't even planning on doing but I had to buy it just because it was the perfect fabric."

Date: 2005-03-07 06:56 pm (UTC)I definitely bounce too - I'll watch Titanic and then really want to work on the Jump dress - and then I"ll watch SW and really want a Picnic outfit. So I just continue to make plans for things and then eventually I'm at the point where I can actually start one of them! :-)
