My show. There are pictures.

I normally don't like pictures of me laughing, but this one that Tyler took at my show is actually rather good.  I'm standing beside the last minute painting I did called "A Farb At Heart".  Yep, I take my art very, very seriously.

I put up a whole bunch of pictures of the show on my flickr page here, including several of the gallery and my work, and some of us all hanging out after the reception (which Tyler took), and a couple from when we took the show down on Friday.  I really like this one of Tyler and Mike taken in the arboretum after the reception...

On a different note, I went to lunch with Jill (from the costume shop, not the painting prof) today so that we could talk about my future.  She is convinced that I need to go to grad school if I really want to get anywhere as a costume designer.  As much as I hate the idea of more school right now, my gut agrees with her.  Obviously it's far too late to consider it for this fall (thank god), but as I never ruled out the possibility of grad school, I feel I may come around after a year or so.  But if I do go to grad school in the near future, it WON'T be in the midwest... I don't care if Northwestern and Cincinnati are supposed to be somewhere in the top five programs for the field... Illinois and Ohio are OUT.

1. Your hairpiece is awesome! I love it!

2. Awesome job! Your gowns are beautiful and your paintings are lovely as well. And the farb one rocks.

You deserve to take some well-needed time off!

Thank you! And I'm certainly taking advantage of having some time to myself now... I have a lovely tall stack of library books I'm working through!

I made a visit to Cincinnati, and while the program was clearly very good, I did not like the vibe I got from the people (sort of a snobby attitude) and the city itself was HORRIBLE. The are all around the school was sooo run down. OH and they didn't tell me they had not financial aide available until after I drove all the way there.

Point is, I wouldn't recommend Cincinnati anyway so you wouldn't be missing out :) If you like warm weather, the University of Florida has an awesome program and the costume design professor was really great. (That was the program I dropped out of about three weeks before it started. It wasn't the program. It was me.)

I would definitely recommend getting some theatre jobs before you decide to go to grad school (which I think you are doing?)l. It will give you a really good idea of what the field is actually like before you commit yourself to school. For me, I always loved the design and costume part but the actual theatre part was HORRIBLE. If you don't mind the theatre part, you'll be golden since you clearly have the talent. :)

Sorry if that just sounded like a big lecture! I just want someone to learn from my mistakes! :)

Well, aside from it simply being a LOT easier to get work as a designer with an MFA opposed to a BFA, the main reason is that in the field finding work is totally about who you know. Grad school is the ideal place to start networking and getting the connections you'll need. Yes, a portfolio does speak for itself, but it doesn't do any good if the right people don't see it, and THAT is really what it's all about.

And then there's the matter of unionization (USA- United Scenic Artists, of which most professional designers are a member), and how difficult it is to pass the exam to gain admittance to the union unless you're fresh out of a masters' course.
